Tank Sales, Delivery, and Installation

Water Tank Sizes and Capacities

Steel water storage from 5,000 to 100,000 gallons, with custom builds to 700,000.

Most people start with a number. How many gallons do I need, and what will it take to get one on the ground. This page lists our water tank sizes from 5,000 to 100,000 gallons, with dimensions, footprint, and the capacity figure that actually counts when a fire marshal reviews your plans.

We engineer, deliver, and install across California and the West. One company from quote to commissioning.

The number that matters is not the number on the tank

Two capacity figures appear on every tank spec sheet and they are not the same.

Total capacity is the volume the shell holds when full to the top. Net usable capacity is what you can actually draw. It accounts for outlet height and the volume that sits below it.

For potable and process water the difference is a planning detail. For fire protection it is the whole ballgame. NFPA 22 requires a dedicated volume of usable water. If your local fire authority asks for 15,000 gallons of fire reserve, a tank rated 16,392 gallons total but roughly 14,150 usable does not meet the requirement. You need the next size up.

This is the most common sizing mistake we see, and it is why we publish both numbers for every tank on this page. Not sure which figure your authority will hold you to? Call before you spec it. That conversation takes five minutes and can save a redesign.

Tank sizes in detail

5,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLR 04/02 · 4,990 gallons total · 4,340 gallons net usable · 11 ft diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

The smallest tank in our steel line and the most common choice for rural properties, livestock water, and small orchard blocks. At 11 feet across it fits on a pad most properties already have.

Typical uses: domestic supply on a well, livestock troughs, frost protection on small acreage, and residential wildfire defense where the county requires on site storage.

On fire protection at this size: most authorities asking for residential fire reserve land between 2,500 and 5,000 gallons. At 4,340 usable this tank clears the low end but not always the high end. Confirm the requirement before you order.

10,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLR 08/02 · 9,907 gallons total · 8,510 gallons net usable · 15 ft 5 in diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

The step up most rural and small commercial buyers make once they run the numbers on a single tank serving both domestic supply and fire reserve.

Typical uses: agricultural operations combining irrigation supply with fire protection, small packing and processing facilities, rural residences on longer response times, and vineyard frost protection.

The 15 ft 5 in footprint still fits most existing pads. Beyond this size, site access and foundation start driving the conversation as much as capacity does.

13,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLE 10/02 · 12,946 gallons total · 11,200 gallons net usable · 17 ft 7 in diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

A middle capacity that comes up when a fire calculation lands just above 10,000 gallons of usable reserve and the next size up is more tank than the site needs.

Typical uses: commercial fire protection at smaller facilities, agricultural operations with combined irrigation and fire duty, and rural developments where the district sets a fixed reserve.

16,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLE 13/02 · 16,392 gallons total · 14,150 gallons net usable · 19 ft 9 in diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

One of the most requested sizes we sell, and a common landing point for commercial fire protection where calculated demand comes in between 10,000 and 15,000 gallons of usable reserve.

Typical uses: fire protection at solar and battery energy storage sites, packing and processing facilities, mid size agricultural operations, and rural subdivisions where the fire district sets a fixed reserve.

Watch the usable number on this one. At roughly 14,150 gallons net usable, this tank does not satisfy a 15,000 gallon fire reserve requirement even though it is labeled above 16,000. If your authority specified 15,000 usable, step up to the 20,243 gallon model. We would rather tell you that now than after the plan check.

20,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLE 15.02 · 20,243 gallons total · 17,500 gallons net usable · 22 ft diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

The size we most often recommend when a 15,000 gallon usable fire reserve is specified, because it clears the requirement with margin rather than sitting right on the line.

Typical uses: fire protection at solar and battery energy storage sites, food processing and cold storage facilities, and larger agricultural operations running combined irrigation and fire duty.

At 22 feet across, a poured ring foundation becomes part of the site conversation.

30,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLE 23.02 · 29,093 gallons total · 25,200 gallons net usable · 26 ft 4 in diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

Where projects cross from a tank purchase into a construction project. At this capacity the foundation, the access road, and the plumbing typically take more attention than the tank itself.

Typical uses: fire protection at utility scale solar and battery energy storage sites, industrial process water, large packing and processing facilities, and district or multi property agricultural supply.

Note the label. Buyers ask for a 30,000 gallon tank and this is the model that answers it, at 29,093 gallons total. If your requirement is a hard 30,000 usable, the next size up is the honest answer.

40,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLE 30/02 · 39,626 gallons total · 34,300 gallons net usable · 30 ft 9 in diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

A common specification on utility scale energy projects and larger industrial sites, where fire protection demand is calculated from sprinkler and hydrant flow rather than a flat district requirement.

Typical uses: fire protection at utility scale solar and battery energy storage sites, industrial and manufacturing facilities, and large scale agricultural and processing operations.

At 30 ft 9 in diameter, expect an engineered foundation and a site plan. These projects usually start with a visit rather than a phone quote.

50,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLE 40/02 · 51,785 gallons total · 44,850 gallons net usable · 35 ft 2 in diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

Typical uses: utility scale fire protection, municipal and district supply, industrial process water, and large agricultural storage.

65,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLE 50/02 · 65,567 gallons total · 56,750 gallons net usable · 39 ft 6 in diameter · 7 ft 2 in tall

Typical uses: utility scale fire protection, municipal and district supply, and industrial process water where a single tank is preferred over multiple smaller ones.

100,000 Gallon Water Tanks

Model XLE 50/03 · 97,148 gallons total · 88,000 gallons net usable · 39 ft 6 in diameter · 10 ft 7 in tall

The largest tank in our standard line. Same 39 ft 6 in footprint as the 65,000 gallon model, with the added capacity coming from height rather than diameter, which matters when your pad is already sized.

Typical uses: fire protection at utility scale solar and battery energy storage sites, industrial process water, municipal and district supply, and large scale agricultural storage.

Above this size we build custom to 700,000 gallons. Those projects start with a site visit and an engineered drawing rather than a catalog number.

What drives the cost of a tank project

The tank is one line on the quote. What moves the total:

  • Foundation. Engineered concrete ring, full slab, or compacted base, driven by soil and by code
  • Plumbing and fittings. Inlet, outlet, overflow, and fire department connection where required
  • Liner and coating. Potable service requires an NSF 61 certified liner
  • Permits and engineering. Varies widely by county and by authority
  • Freight. Distance from the yard your tank ships out of

We quote all of it in one number, so you are not assembling a project from four vendors.

Tell us the gallons and the town. We will tell you the tank.
